My art majors did a clay heart for their Valentine's project which I borrowed from mrspicasso's art room. She used the Clay Bakery but since we have tons of clay, I didn't want to spend extra money for the same effect. The students rolled out a slab and then drew a heart out before cutting into it. I had to help out with the hearts, they can be difficult to get symmetrical. This was the first ceramic lesson where they learned about slip and scoring. After they cut out the heart, we began rolling out snakes to coil up. I had a few who saw my example and went in a different direction, which I totally encourage. It wouldn't be art if I always made them do what I do. Anyways, some added coils to the entire heart others just to the outside. All were creative and unique. Here are some pictures of the hearts out of the kiln before they painted them.
This student went in his own direction. I love the hearts within the hearts! |
