I have a routine of checking my blog dashboard everyday to see what new art projects are out there for us to explore. I notice quiet a few bloggers blogging about shaving cream art. After reading the directions I knew this had to be a project for my third graders and they were going to love it. I had to buy at least 12 bottles of shaving cream for us to have enough for all the students in 3rd grade. One of those things I paid out of pocket. Not bad since we have a Dollar Tree really close. I was real particular about my procedures for this project because after Monday's class I had nightmares on how to make the lesson smoother. After my nightmares Monday my Tuesday class went perfectly. The kids loved and were just tickled to be doing this project. Even after telling them we are using shaving cream I had a student taste it to make sure it wasn't whipped cream. Sometimes I wonder, but the student soon figured out I wasn't lying. They enjoyed having a few colors to pick from and I wish I was able to provide more but everyone was please with their outcome. Here is one picture of a finsihed shaving cream art paper:
If you do this project I do recommend making sure they fill the whole paper with the design. Many of my students did a small area and didn't have enough design to use for the next step. The next thing was figuring out what to do with this paper. Well after a lot of research and creativeness I cam up with using the design to make flowers. The students traced an outline I create on their paper, cut them out and glued them to a background we created in the second class visit. Overall it took three classes to finish the project, but I think they turned out so great!
For the background we used oil pastels to draw the vase and table. Then we painted the top part with black paint. The table and vase were painted with watercolors of their choice.
This was my half example of the finished product. They took a oil pastel and drew the stem and leaf, then folded the flower cut outs to help them pop off the page. We glued the large cut out down then the small one on top of it. I will post more pictures of their finished piece soon!
