Fall is my favorite time of the year. Pumpkins are one of my favorite decorations and ingredients to cook with. This time of the year I break out the loaf pans and begin to make my famous Paula Deen pumpkin bread. Don't tell anyone but I also turn on some early Christmas tunes while I bake. The smell of pumpkin filling my little house is wonderful.
I was eager to plan some pumpkins into our art time. I got this idea from Mrs. Picasso's Art Room. The was my Kinders first experience with sponges, paint and scissors. So I had lot of explaining to do and I broke it into three class sessions, due to materials having to dry. Before we began we learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin, read some pumpkin poems and studied pictures of different poems.
First- we used black marker to draw a small, medium, and large pumpkins on two sheets or orange 9 x 12 construction paper. The large pumpkin on one paper and the two smaller ones on the other. Once we drew them we used a mixture of gold and orange paint to paint the lines down the pumpkin and a little brown for the stem.
Second-We took half (vertically) of a 12 x18 green construction paper and cut one side in a wavy pattern. This was glued on the bottom of (for the grass) 12 x 18 purple paper. I cut sponges into vertical swiggle lines and small rectangles. Students dipped the long wiggly sponges into purple paint to add detail to the sky and the small rectangles into green for detail to the grass.
Third-I bought some spray glitter and students had the option to let me spray their sky with it. Let's say my can was empty at the end of the week, no one turned it down. Then we reviewed how to use the scissors and cut out the three pumpkins and glued them onto the background.
I have put the finish product up in our library so parents come check it out during Book Fair next week (November 15-18).
