Color
This is my first time teaching art at the beginning of the year. After picking out tons of art projects I decided to start the year off teaching the elements of art. Beginning with the easiest: COLOR. I looked at the grade expectations to determine which grade will learn primary, secondary, intermediate, etc...
Every lesson began with a Brain Pop Jr.on Colors and then I read Mouse Paint.I scanned Mouse Paint and the students viewed it on my big screen.
Every table was given a palette of the primary colors. Ocasionally after the 1st and 2nd graders I had to refresh the colors. I rarely wash a lot of paint down the drain.
Kindergarten: students will be able to identify which colors are the primary colors. We used our three fingers to (pointer, middle and ring) to dip in the primary colors and place it on the triangle.
First and Sedcond Grade: students will be able to identify the primary colors and secondary colors and will create secondary colors.
After doing this lesson with my first grades I realized they had trouble understand you had to use one hand to dip your fingers in the paint and the other hand to mix the secondary colors. Even after repeating it and demonstrating. I had many students who had made a mess with their paint palettes. Next year I will have to find an eaiser way to teach 1st grade how to mix the primary to make secondary.
To make it easier I placed the papers in the table buckets. Having a seating chart helps me plan how many to put in each bucket.
Third Grade: students will be able identify the primary, secondary and intermediate colors. Student will use a paint brush to paint the primary colors and mix the secondary colors. This lesson is a two class period lesson. The next time they see me we will mix the intermediate colors.
