Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers

Since we are approaching summer I thought it would be a good opportunity to draw, paint and collage sunflowers. I start off by showing a fake sunflower I bought and a slide show of other sunflowers. Discussing how they are different sizes, different heights, how the inside of the flower is brown-orange and the petals are orange-yellow. After a little background knowledge we start by drawing the vase, stems, insides of the flower and leaves. If you notice we don't draw the petals, I will teach them how to use their paint brush to make the petals. Then we finish by drawing a background and we discuss foreground and background. If we have time we begin painting starting at the top with brown, then green and finish the vase in blue or red. All my classes are drawing different versions of the sunflowers. Kindergarten is doing sunflowers and daisies, first grade is making a sunflower paper collage, second grade is drawing and painting on 12 x 18 paper and third is doing a bigger version. Third grade added a sunflower laying in the foreground. All my little artist are working hard and doing their best stay tuned for finished products.
